Worried About Your Child Having a Scary Smile This Halloween? Try These Tricks

Tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental issues can make your child’s smile very scary, especially during Halloween. So, it’s best to help your child have the best and most successful oral health in Madison, Connecticut, so they can enjoy this Halloween holiday without having to worry about toothaches and dental issues.

To help you, our Madison Dental Spa team recommends doing the following things:

  • Encourage your child to avoid choosing hard, sticky candies out of the many trick-or-treating baskets. These types of candy can stick to the teeth and increase your child’s chances of having dental cavities.
  • Have your child eat their candy at specific times. It’s best to have them eat their treats during or shortly after a meal. This is helpful because the saliva produced while eating will wash away the harmful candy particles.
  • Take advantage of fluoride as much as possible. Have your child drink fluoridated water and use fluoride toothpaste. Doing these things will strengthen your child’s tooth enamel so it can fight the effects of sugar.
  • Make sure your child keeps up on their oral hygiene routine. Deeply cleaning the teeth and gums will help them maintain a strong and healthy smile this Halloween.
  • Encourage your child to chew sugarless gum that has been approved by the American Dental Association after eating candy. Chewing this gum will help produce saliva and wash away the harmful bacteria in the mouth.
